This year's Brighton & Hove Virtual Festival - the seventh - ran during September 2004 and included the VF04 Web Awards and a series of workshops and events.

A big thank you to all the supporters, volunteers and sponsors who helped make it such a great success.

Over 100 nominations were received. A team of sixteen judges looked at the sites and came up with a shortlist of five in each category. More than 2500 people voted. 100 people came to the Awards Ceremony at Sussex Arts Club... and now we have seven winners

Events Programme

Our free programme of events provided an opportunity for over 100 people to find out something new about how computers and internet may affect their lives.

 

What is the future of eDemocracy?

This included an open meeting about eDemocracy meeting, which took place during the Labour Party Conference. The panel of three included Brian White, Labour MP for Milton Keynes and member of the eDemocracy Paliamentary Group, Tom Steinberg of MySociety.org and Dan Jellinek of Headstar, a Brighton-based expert on eGovernment and eDemocracy issues.

One of the 40-odd attendees blogged the event - see Dave Phelen's blog for details which covers the details of what was discussed.

 

eBusiness: How mobile computing can help your business

Sussex Enterprise and Business Link sponsored an eBusiness event which attracted over 40 peoplto learn more about how mobile technology is heloping business. This included presentations by three local businesspeople involved in the wireless industry in different ways.

Alex Studd of local ISP moving-edge explained some of the potential of remote working and the practical requirements in terms of accessing office-based networks form home or on the road.

Matt Ryan of Loose Connection drew on his long experience of using wireless networking to explaining the potential cost benefitsof using wi-fi to connect networks within an office.

And Tom Hume of Future Platforms provided an insight into the ways that handheld and portable devices can make a difference in helping people keep in touch with the office.

The event took place at the Koba in Western Road and was set up by Wired Sussex and the SUssex Enterprise eBusiness Club.

SCIP also ran introductory sessions about Linux and Apple Mac plus free workshops for community groups including fundraising and the internet [full list still available on the events programme page]
