For many years people have been using computer networks to send messages to one another. There are all sorts of reasons why this is more convenient than other forms of communication, but it is best to think of it as part of a mix of phone calls, meetings and letters. The Internet now makes it easy and cheap to send messages to people across the planet

About Email

Addresses and mailboxes
Your address will be in the form of:
myname@thenameofmyemailservice.co.uk

This means there is a mailbox somewhere on the internet with your name on it, something like having a PO Box

Sending and receiving messages
When someone sends you a message it goes into your mailbox, on a computer which is permanently connected to the Internet. You can then connect to the internet and use software to see what is in your mailbox.

If you send a message to someone's mailbox they do the same thing -- they don't get the message until they check in their mailbox.

About Mailing-lists

Email is a very simple technology and one of the most cost-effective means of communication ever invented. You can swap news with relatives, talk to experts about your favourite subject and join in with discussions using mailing lists, which are simple to join and can help you join in with other people's discussion.
