A True Murder Mystery |
|
| Whether you decide to creep through Brighton's sewers, retread the smugglers trail or stroll through the world of Winnie the Pooh - there's a tour for you. Ross Bentley recalls the tour he went on last year. | |

Last year, several friends and I met at midnight outside the Town Hall ready to follow the Murder at Midnight Tour. Our philandering friend John was a notable absentee - he had arranged for a new lady friend to come down that evening for what John hoped would be their first night of boundless passion.
Could you blame him? Given the choice between soft lighting, fine wine and potential bedroom antics as opposed to two hours in the cold visiting the sites of Brighton's gruesome past.
Still, we were captivated as our guide told tales of mysterious bodies andevil doings. Along the way we were shown where the infamous Trunk Murders were discovered. We paused for a few minutes in Preston Park where during the 1920's a woman was found minus her head - she had been decapitated with a shovel.
Our bloody trail led up St. James Street into Kemptown and off a side road where our guide stopped his entourage right outside John's home. We suppressed giggles at the sight of candles in John's window. Just as the Queen raises her standard when in residence, John lights his candles when there's a chance of a shag.
The assembled mass were informed that this house (John's house) was the scene of a brutal axe killing many years ago. Whilst John made love behind the flickering curtains - thirty faces looked up at the bedroom window wondering at the atrocities that had occurred there.
...And myth has it on a good night you can still hear her scream," intoned our compere.
